Picking Purslane

In the next couple of days we will be harvesting purslane, which is a very delicious little succulent type plant. It can be quite the pesky little plant for some gardeners and can take over quite quickly with heat and water.

Maybe instead of spraying it with poison or throwing it away how about trying to eat it. I first found out about this plant four years ago when I planted a garden at a community garden plot.

A very nice lady came up to me and explained that what I was pulling out of the ground was not a weed and that if I didn’t want it she would be glad to take it and make soup out of it. At the time I thought this was rather peculiar, because of the simple fact that I was not into foraging at the time.

Now I plan on doing several different things with it such as drying it, blanching and freezing it, pickling it and doing anything else I can figure out to do with it as well as make soup and salads out of it.

This foraging adventure of mine has become quite a journey filled with surprise and joy and I highly recommend foraging for everyone. Why pay the high prices of a grocery store for everything when you can go out in nature and pick something for free.

Until next time happy foraging!
