Canning Season

Canning season is fast approaching and before you know it we will all be canning our family favorites to eat throughout the year. This year I decided to do some revamping of my pantry and get rid of old food to start with and then prepare my canning jars for the season. This has been a task that I’ve needed to complete for a few years and I’m finally done with it.

It is extremely important to look over the dates of all your canned goods and remove anything that is over five years old. I also did some re-organization and bought some new rings and seals and got all my jars ready. I strongly suggest getting your jars ready before the peak of canning season starts due to the fact that it is easier to find rings and seals right now than later.

Also another little trick I use to save money when it comes to canning is to go to your local secondhand stores to buy used canning jars and supplies. Doing this has saved me a ton of money over the years and the cost of each jar with the ring and seal is usually 1/3 of the cost of a new jar. Every time I buy a used canning jar at a secondhand store I look at it like I’m zeadopting them, which I know is kind of quirky of me but what can I say I’m a little eccentric and weirdly sentimental about canning jars.
