Call Me Chicken

Many of you may not know this but I absolutely love to raise chickens. There is something about their clucking and crowing in nature that adds something of beauty to the farm. When I lived in town over four years ago I had a small backyard flock of chickens. At that time in the town that I lived in it was not legal to have them, but I did it anyway. I found out that last year this town finally legalized keeping backyard chickens and I am glad for it, because owning them was one of the best experiences of my life. Here is a list of the names of my chickens and their breed types.

My chicken list…

Persephone – Common Black
Aphrodite – Golden New Hampshire
Luna – Full Moon New Hampshire
Gaia – Speckled Sussex
Artemis and Diana – Americana x 2
Athena – Silver Lace Wing Wyandotte
Isis – Black Americana Bantam
Fortuna – Salmon Faverolle Bantam
Hera – Barred Rock

Eventually I added to my flock a breed known as Buff Orpingtons which are lovely birds that can be used for both meat and eggs and do well in very cold temperatures. I look back on my time with the chickens as such a wonderful time while collecting their eggs and spending time with them. This last year I lost my last bird out on the farm and her name was Diana.

In the last year’s of some of my birds lives they spend it here on the farm free ranging around and extremely happy. I would like very much to re-create this flock in the future and to experience having chickens once again. It is an experience who’s memories have brought so much joy to my life and I would like to experience it again.

Searching on Amazon prime I noticed that they have a documentary on there that I had seen before called, “The Natural History of the Chicken”. One of my favorite stories from this documentary is called, “Call Me Chicken” and so I decided to share it with you from YouTube today. I recommend watching it with some tissues, because it is a tearjerker.

Whenever I watch documentaries on chickens I’ve become so sad to see how this species is being abused by the factory farm. In the future I would like very much to have a chicken farm and keep chickens the way that they were meant to be kept and treated them with respect. Once I started working with chickens I quickly fell deeply in love with them and I would very much like to preserve the quality of their breeds and their lives for future generations.

I hope you enjoy the video.
